Psychedelic, heavy, prog and more innovating sounds spanning the late 60s and the early 70s – Wednesday January 25th. Dan’s pick of the week: A Barca Do Sol (A Barca Do Sol), Som Nosso De Cada Dia (Snegs), Terreno Baldio (Terreno Baldio), Recordando O Vale Das Macas (Recordando O Vale Das Macas) & Saecula Saeculorum (Saecula Saeculorum).

A Barca Do Sol werd in 1973 opgericht als voorprogramma van de muzikant Peri Reis, maar uiteindelijk speelden ze alleen en werden ze een grote naam voor de Braziliaanse progressieve rock. Ze hadden folk-rock invloeden, en vanwege de gebruikte instrumenten wordt hun sound dikwijls vergeleken met dat van Jethro Tull. De band werd ontbonden in 1981.

Review door Alvaro Neder van AllMusic.com: “A Barca Do Sol was a group that was active between 1974 and 1981. Several of its members became famous musicians or interpreters: Jaques Morelembaum (cello), David Ganc (flutes), Ritchie (flute), Nando Carneiro (violão), and the brothers Muri and Marcelo Costa.

The group’s concept was to provide acoustic renditions of their originals, based on American folk, in the preferred 6/8 time signature of the Clube da Esquina gang (the structure that their beautiful hit, included here, “Lady Jane,” is based on), in the harmony lessons of Egberto Gismonti and Dori Caymmi, and in progressive rock (some of the flute attacks are obviously reminiscent of Jethro Tull‘s). The lyrics are an important aspect of their work; for example, “Lady Jane” was inspired both by the Rolling Stones and by D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chaterley roman (in that book, the protagonists call each other’s sexual organs “Lady Jane” and “John Thomas”). Egberto Gismonti appears in two tracks playing a synthesizer, an innovation in those times in Brazil.”
