Oiapok is een Franse rockband uit Straatsburg. Zelf zeggen ze over hun muziek: “Onze composities zijn geïnspireerd door future jazz, progressieve rock, tropische funk, folk, repetitieve en Afro-Braziliaanse muziek.”

Progressive Rock Central.com review: “The band is made up of Etienne Agard, on trombone; Jacopo Costa, on vibraphone, marimba, and percussion; Bertrand Eber, on trumpet; Stéphane Galeski, on guitars; Guillaume Gravelin, on harp; Mélanie Gerber, on lead vocals; Matthieu Lenorman, on drums; and Pierre Wawrzyniak, on bass.

I get a feeling of 1960s Brazilian jazz, similar to the free flow sound and breezy feeling, of songs like, “The Girl from Ipanema”: whose lead singer Astrud Gilberto, we unfortunately lost to time, so recently. Psychedelic, heavy, prog and more innovating sounds spanning the late 60s and the early 70s –  Wednesday August 15th.  Dan’s pick of the week: Nektar (Remember the Future), Faust (Faust IV), Curved Air (Phantasmagoria), Wishbone Ash (Argus) & Greenslade (Greenslade Live).

Remember the Future is het vierde album van de Engelse progressieve rockband Nektar. Net als hun debuutalbum Journey to the Centre of the Eye is het een conceptalbum dat formeel is opgedeeld in tien tracks, maar in feite uit één doorlopend stuk muziek bestaat.

Prog Archives review: “Remember The Future is another superior concept piece from Nektar exhibiting yet further progression from their roots. Gone are the heavy and psychedelic Germanic riffs, intricate musicianship and complex Symphonic Prog structures, to be replaced by a more song based mainstream ‘Americanized’ sound.

Art Rock Show – Seven Chambers (Week 49)

Unitopia is een Australische muziekgroep die zich begeeft binnen de genres progressieve rock en metal. De band wordt in 1997 opgericht door Mark Trueack en Sean Timms. En nu, elf jaar na de laatste studioplaat, eindelijk een nieuw album.

Erik Groeneweg van Prog Wereld: “Een nieuwe plaat met een verrassende bezetting! De ritmesectie bestaat uit twee legendes uit de jazzrock, bassist Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santana, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett) en drummer Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa, Phil Collins, Genesis, John Fogerty, Santana). Trueack heeft Steve Unruh meegenomen uit zijn side-project United Progressive Fraternity (UPF) en op gitaar treffen we John Greenwood aan, die naast zijn recent afgesloten loopbaan als directeur van het brandwondencentrum in Adelaide ook een geweldige gitarist is. Hij kwam in contact met de band omdat gitarist Jimmy Keegan, die met een akoestische versie van UPF toerde, een ongeluk met zijn hand kreeg en door Greenwood behandeld werd.… Read more...

Art Rock Show – Prima Materia (Week 48)

Agusa ontstond in 2013, toen Tobias Petterson en Mikael Ödesjö Dag Strömqvist en Jonas Berge rekruteerden voor een progressief rockproject. Na een handvol optredens in de winter besloot Dag Agusa te verlaten om een tijdje in India rond te reizen. Na een aantal audities sloot Tim Wallander zich aan bij de band.

Prog Archives review: “Swedish prog quintet Agusa has returned with their fifth album, Prima Materia, a lush collection of (mostly) instrumental psychedelic rock tunes. This record was my introduction to the band and their unique tonalities that ostensibly wave the prog and psyche banners.
