Art Rock Show – Painful Clown & Ninja Tiger (Week 6)

Pete Overell van Everything Is Noise: “I’ve always enjoyed WANG WEN and felt they had enough unique qualities to set them apart from their peers previously, but their new album elevates them above the pack. Painful Clown & Ninja Tiger brilliantly mixes in new facets to their music, with the most noticeable being the addition of jazz elements. Big horns and Snarky Puppy flavours litter the album, creating a new atmosphere for the band.… Read more...

Rock On! Wednesday, February 8, 2023 – Birth Control, Guru Guru, Lucifer’s Friend, Pavlov’s Dog & Frumpy

Psychedelic, heavy, prog and more innovating sounds spanning the late 60s and the early 70s – Wednesday January 25th. Dan’s pick of the week: Birth Control (Operation), Guru Guru (Guru Guru), Lucifer’s Friend (Where the Groupies Killed the Blues), Pavlov’s Dog (Pampered Menial) & Frumpy (Frumpy Live).

Victor Guimarães van Tomymostalas: “Recorded in 1971, Operation is Birth Control’s second studio album, and it brought more of the good old progressive rock from the 70s. It originally consisted of six tracks, but when it was re-released in 1997, five more tracks from related singles were added.… Read more...

Art Rock Show – Exotic Creatures and a Stolen Dream (Week 5)

Prog Archives review: “Yesterday was the official release date for the latest offering of Ukraine’s No. 1 prog maestro Antony Kalugin. In the last few years he has operated productively under his own name and Karfagen. This is the first Sunchild album since 2018 when “Messages from Afar – The Division and Illusion of Time” was released as some sort of sequel to a 2017 Karfagen album.

It’s not so easy to see any major differences between various Antony Kalugin projects, but perhaps one could claim Sunchild to be slightly more song-oriented.… Read more...

Art Rock Show – Beyond the Veil (Week 4)

Doug van The Progressive Subway: “The relationship between jazz and progressive music is always an interesting one. Defining the roots of prog as a whole presents a challenge when each artist insists upon claiming their own unique kaleidoscopic snowflake of influences, but the freeform, rule-defying attitude of jazz makes itself heard in most such palettes; nevertheless, jazz fusion usually sets itself apart as a separate label entirely. Constructing their sound around the most chaotic elements of that jazz influence, iNFiNiEN return with Beyond the Veil to show audiences once again how seamlessly jazz and prog can integrate.… Read more...
