Art Rock Show – Walking up That Valley (Week 7)

Needlepoint is een werkelijk unieke band uit Noorwegen rond multi-instrumentalist Bjørn Klakegg. Ze werkt met leden van Elephant9, Møster! en Bigbang. Fans van Soft Machine, ELP en Camel zullen zich meteen thuis voelen met deze warme terugblik op de hoogtijdagen van de experimentele rockmuziek.

Alex Driessen van Prog Wereld: “Het gebruik van klavecimbel, viool, fluit en een koor(tje) voegen extra lagen toe aan een album dat al barst van de ideeën. De luisteraar wordt heen en weer geslingerd tussen dromerige vintage toetsenpartijen, drukke drums en percussie, geestverruimend, jazz-getint gitaarwerk en inventieve, krachtige baslijnen. Klakegg’s zachte en melodieuze stem krijgt genoeg ruimte in de mix, terwijl de teksten verhalen over de weg tussen realiteit en fantasie.

De inmiddels kenmerkende stijl van Needlepoint klinkt op zijn best in openingsnummer Rules Of A Mad Man: heerlijke aan Robert Wyatt en John Marshall (Soft Machine) refererende drums van Olaf Olsen met daarnaast de geprononceerde baspartijen van Nikolai Hængsle, het fuzzy orgeltje van David Wallumrød en de zachte, soms fluisterende stem van Klakegg, die nog steeds doet denken aan Caravan’s Pye Hastings.… Read more...
